Aldi approval appealed

Meanwhile, Waterford Co Council’s decision to give the go-ahead for a proposed Aldi store at Crobally Upper, Tramore, has been appealed to An Bord Pleanala.

In late January Aldi Stores (Ireland) Ltd were granted permission to demolish dwellings and construct a discount food store on the 2-acre site.

The appellants are Mary Higgins, Peter Burns (proprietor of the nearby Riverstown Stores) and retail umbrella group RGDATA.

Local councillor Blaise Hannigan was among those who objected to the application after it was re-lodged with the local authority last August, four years after permission was originally refused.

He’s concerned about traffic safety given the site’s location between the GAA Club roundabout and Tramore AFC’s Graun Park grounds, and also the impact on preservation orders attached to Pine trees in the area.

Mr Burns, who employs 14 people from the locality in his expanded store, believes there’s no justification for another supermarket, or that at least a more central location should be looked at.

Ms Higgins says the application pays “scant attention” to An Bord Pleanala’s previous assertion (made in examining an appeal by Aldi that was ultimately withdrawn) that the site wasn’t suitable and alternatives hadn’t been adequately explored.

The case is due to be decided by June 24th.

One Response to “Aldi approval appealed”

  1. David Says:

Why is Hannigan objecting to a new business, with new jobs coming to Tramore.
That side of town badly needs a supermarket , Riverstown stores is a corner shop and people should be forced into shopping there
