Jim Moore has been appointed as Chairperson of the Governing Body of Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT). The appointment of Mr Moore, a native of Wexford, follows an open call for expressions of interest run by the Public Appointments Service.
WIT President Willie Donnelly welcomed the appointment. “Mr Moore is a member of the WIT governing body and chair of the institute’s audit committee,” he said.
“He has a deep commitment to the Institute and a track record in providing leadership in education both nationally and regionally. This leadership will be particularly important in helping the institute respond to the educational needs of the region and in particular to the development of our Technological University bid with IT Carlow.”
Institutes of Technology have a key role in driving regional development and jobs growth. Mr Moore’s experience and knowledge in both the public, private and voluntary sectors, will ensure that WIT can be a strong driver of economic development and jobs growth in the South East region.
Jim Moore said he was pleased with the new appointment. “I look forward to continuing the work of the previous Chair and the President of WIT on attracting high quality jobs to the region,” he said.
Mr Moore brings great experience from the public service and has board experience, including as chair. He is a business-owner, as founder and managing director of Haven Maritime, based in the South East.
He is also a qualified engineer, with professional qualifications from Cork Institute of Technology, University College Dublin, University of Limerick, and the Institute of Public Administration.
Jim Moore also has a strong education background, having served on Waterford/Wexford Education and Training Board, the National Parents Council, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI).
Said Education Minister Richard Bruton: “Jim Moore has a proven track record of public service, both within and outside the education sector, and combines this with great private sector experience.
“IoTs have a key role in driving regional development and jobs growth. His professional experience and skillset means that he is the right person to ensure that Waterford IT is equipped to anticipate and respond to changing skills needs in the South East. He will ensure that WIT can provide the skilled workers that are needed to ensure the future competitiveness and strength of the region. I wish Jim Moore well in his future role as Chair of the Governing Authority.”
