Waterford’s Christmas Festival, Winterval, is to be given a new lease of life this year with a new committee being appointed under the helm of former CEO of Waterford Chamber, Nick Donnelly.
Announcing the news at the June meeting of Waterford City & County Council, Director of Services Lar Power confirmed that Winterval would most definitely be taking place this year, despite rumours to the contrary.
He paid tribute to the steering committee led by Barry Monaghan who founded and built the festival over the past five years.
“That committee did Trojan work but the time came when they wished to step down and so we had to review the whole set-up.”
Mr Power added that initially council decided to test the market to see if there would be any commercial entities interested in taking it on. “A number of interested parties came forward but upon vetting them we weren’t happy that it would work the way we wanted it to.”
He said council had subsequently secured a new committee under the chairmanship of Nick Donnelly who he described as very professional, competent and “an excellent ambassador for Waterford.”
Lisa Grant, of Waterford City & County Council has been appointed as Festival manager and has already begun work on this year’s festival said Mr Power adding that a full press release was due to be issued later this week.
