Personality Portrait: Kevin Casey

Kevin Casey grew up in the heartland of Gaelic Football in Kerry and as a youngster kicked football for Glenflesk with future inter-county stars John Crowley and the legendary Seamus Moynihan.

Boyhood heroes included Pat Spillane and Norman Whiteside at a time when Manchester United enjoyed considerable less success than the mighty men of Kerry.

Kevin’s first foray into the Radio was while living in England when he covered Premiership matches for RTE in London.

Visits to Highbury left a lasting impression and he also covered London Irish rugby games for the national broadcaster.

In late 1999 he was reporter at Twickenham on the day when France stunned the All Blacks in the World Cup semi-final. He combined radio work while working with The Irish World newspaper.

Upon his return to Ireland and realising his passion for radio he studied full-time for nine months with Radio Kerry who ran a pilot scheme with FAS covering all aspects of radio-production, technical and legal aspects of the medium.

Following on from the course he worked for a two year period with the Radio Kerry’s sports department where he produced bulletins, presented Weekend sports shows and produced several packages for the Station’s flagship sports show ‘Terrace Talk’ alongside the well-known Weeshie Fogarty.

He continued to work on a freelance basis for RTE and also produced several items for Newstalk 106 and occasionally Today FM.

Through his work as PRO for the Kerry Ladies Football County Board he became involved with the national organisation in Croke Park and was responsible for writing weekly copy for the Irish Times, Irish Independent and the Irish Examiner.

Early this year he moved to Waterford to take up the position of Sport Editor with WLR FM.

He presents the Friday night programme ‘Gaelic Ground’ and also presents packages for Matt Keane’s ‘Terrace Talk’ show while all the while striving to help the station to present sporting content relevant to its listeners.
