Waterford’s William Keane named Young Farmer of the Year 2009

William Keane, a 26-year-old dairy and beef farmer from Ardmore, County Waterford, has been named the 2009 FBD Young Farmer of the Year.
The announcement was on Tuesday last, September 1st at an awards ceremony held in the Breaffy House Hotel in Castlebar, County Mayo.
William was presented with a specially commissioned sculpture by Irish-based artist Aileen Anne Brannigan and a travel bursary worth €3,000.
Substantial prizes were also awarded to second Bill O’Keefe a pedigree dairy farmer from Kilkenny and third placed Brian Reidy, a 29-year-old dairy farmer from Tubbercurry, County Sligo.
A total of 26 contestants from all over Ireland took part in the 11th Young Farmer of the Year final. The competition aims to recognise excellence in the agricultural industry and promote farming as a career with a bright future.
“Each year, through the FBD Young Farmer of the Year Awards, we encounter committed, enthusiastic young farmers, who look on farming as a business that must deliver an acceptable return on investment,” said FBD Insurance’s Pat Gilligan.
