There was great excitement among the youths of Tramore as they embarked on the newly revamped Tramore Youth and Family Project. The café went through a huge refurbishment thanks to the “Colour Your Community Project.” Tramore Youth and Family Project bases itself on empowering young individuals aged between 10 to 18 to be active in their development both mentally and physically and to be involved positively within their own community. Over 100 young people come through the doors every year and new members are always welcomed. Every Tuesday Youth Booth café opens it doors from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and 7pm to 9pm on Thursday’s. The young people can come in, meet friends and relax with a delicious hot chocolate. There is also a television, Xbox, books, board games or you can simply just have a chat with friends or meet new people.

New athletic track for Tramore?

A municipal athletic track seems set to become part of Tramore’s new Town Park. That emerged at the December meeting of the local Town Council, which heard from Town Manager Brian White that, with phase one of the park nearing completion, attention was turning to other parts of the project.

He said Area Engineer Morris Conway had been in touch with Tramore Athletic Club with a view to it managing and using the proposed new facility, between the car park at the front of the Majestic and the lake.

Queen of the Land 2011

Amid much tension, the winner of the Queen of the Land for 2011 (sponsored by FBD) was announced recently. Huge cheers erupted from the crowd and amid tears and laughter, Bernie Woods of Mullinavat, Co. Kilkenny, was crowned Queen for 2011. Joined on stage by her delighted family, friends and Macra colleagues, champagne corks popped, and the cameras flashed, all eager to congratulate the glamorous Queen for 2011.

Jamie Torpey emerges as ‘The Lions King’

The Carrick-on-Suir Lions Club would like to congratulate Jamie Torpey on winning the Regional Final of the Lions Club Young Ambassador of the 21st Century Award 2011.

The Regional final was held in The Brandon Hotel, New Ross on Sunday last, featuring finalists representing Lions Clubs from Gorey, Waterford, Enniscorthy and Carrick-on-Suir.

Former Town Clerk takes Clonmel reins

Ger Walsh, who served a number of years as Carrick’s Town Clerk was congratulated at the monthly meeting of Carrick-on-Suir Town Council on his appointment as Town Clerk with Clonmel Borough Council.

The recently elected President Michael D. Higgins was congratulated on his success in the presidential election, as was the outgoing President Mary McAleese on her retirement from the office.

Garda retires

Following fast on the heels of his friend and colleague Garda Eddie Fitzpatrick, who retired in recent weeks, it was the turn of Superintendent Tom O’Grady to bow out last Friday after a most distinguished innings within the Force.

A native of Cashel in County Tipperary, Supt. O’Grady first served in Dungarvan as Inspector before his richly deserved promotion, and in the intervening years he has proven himself to be an outstanding Garda chief in the Dungarvan district where he deservedly commanded the respect and admiration of one and all both within and outside the Force which he served so superbly well.

Champion jockey a big attraction

Champion National Hunt jockey Paul Carberry was a huge hit at Easons in the Shopping Centre last Friday night when he attended to sign copies of his brilliant autobiography entitled ‘One Hell of a Ride’. There with Paul was the well known RTE racing analyst and personal friend Brian Gleeson from nearby Ardmore, and both were delighted at the turnout the event received from the general public.

Proceeds from the night are going to a very worthy and deserving cause, Irish Dogs for the Disabled, for which both Paul and Brian are deserving of great credit.

SPAR Tramore boss gives Fair City’s Christy some tips!

Actors Tom Hopkins and Rose Henderson, otherwise known as Christy Phelan and Val O’Dwyer on ‘Fair City’ were given business tips from SPAR retailers, including Aidan Cronnelly of SPAR Tramore and Ferrybank (pictured).

In return, retailers were treated to a sneak peak of the new SPAR in Carrigstown ahead of last night’s (Tuesday) unveiling to the Irish public, with the SPAR branded shop becoming part of the Fair City storyline for at least the next three years.

Anastasia Purcell (nee O’Neill), Irishtown, New Ross and Slievecorrig, Tullogher was interred in Rosbercon Cemetery.

Mary Lyng, Graiguenamanagh and Bailey Street, New Ross and Waterford Road was interred in Steven’s Cemetery New Ross after 11am Mass in the Parish church New Ross.

New Book by Slieverue Author

Dr Bríd Lynch will launch her publication ‘A Monastic Landscape: The Cistercians in Medieval Ireland’ in The John O’Donovan Parish Centre, Slieverue Village, on Sunday, December 11th, at 12 noon. Dr Lynch’s background as an information officer at Jerpoint Abbey, combined with her skill as a researcher, makes this newly published book a well documented and informative read. In it, Dr Lynch deals with the great houses of Mellifont, Baltinglass, Jerpoint, Duiske, Tintern, and Dunbrody, and the fate of these monasteries in the post-Dissolution period.
