After a brilliant night in Crystal with Nic Fanciulli, Re:Publik return to the Loft to run their local resident night on Saturday February 11th.

Playing on the night are residents Kenno and Warren Sauvage, who played an excellent warm up for Nic in Crystal but no strangers to headlining a bill after countless gigs over the years.

Christmas Voices at Christ Church

Make the brightest start to the festive season with Christmas Voices at Christ Church, Saturday 17th December, 8 p.m. This event brings together performers from all over the world, with the aim of celebrating the diverse cultures of Waterford’s growing international community.

Musicians include the great Niwel Tsumbu, who since arriving in Ireland in 2004 from the Congo has developed an enviable reputation as a masterfully elegant and fluent guitarist, vocalist, musician, collaborator and composer. Joining him will be the Orthodox Music Ensemble, featuring Ukrainian, Latvian, and Russian singers, and the Waterford trio Dulcet, with a special performance of Irish carols.

IMTV win for King Kong Co

Waterford’s very own King Kong Company scooped the prestigious ‘viewers choice’ award at this week’s Irish Music TV Awards in Dublin. This comes hot on the heels of the band announcing a new single to be released on Youtube on Christmas Day, and their only gig – ever – in February 2012.

The IMTV awards, supported by IMRO, recognise excellence in music videos released by Irish artists in the previous 12 months. Over 40 bands were nominated in 10 different categories, featuring the cream of Irish music including The Villagers, Lisa Hannigan, James Vincent McMorrow, Ryan Sheridan, Gavin Friday and Republic of Loose. From the off on Wednesday night at The Sugar Club, the organisers acknowledged this year as the best yet for the high standard of music videos. Making their role of choosing winners even more difficult!

Christmas Crooners at the Theatre Royal will be a wonderful trip down memory lane especially for Christmas and the festive season, featuring many of the Christmas favourites of Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and ‘ole blue eyes himself, Frank Sinatra.

A fantastic cast of West-End singers including Chris Vincent and Robert Grose, backed by the superb Jazz All-Stars band perform over 30 hits including “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire”, “Little Drummer Boy”, “White Christmas” and many swing arrangements of Christmas hymns including “God rest ye merry gentlemen”, “12 Days of Christmas” and “silent night”, along with many of their other hits.

Paddy Greene launches CD

On December 10th at 7pm in the Granville Hotel Paddy Greene will launch his album of songs including Lovers (Soldiers & Dreamers to his many friends) with a performance of a selection of songs from the album by Paddy and his family.

Having graced the planet with his singular presence for next or near the biblical three score and ten, Paddy Greene’s most welcome debut album can safely be described as overdue. Its timing, however, will come as no surprise to his many friends who know that Paddy, more than most, is a man whose colourful life moved ever at its own pace and in its own distinctive fashion.

Hibernian Orchestra

The Symphony Club is pleased to welcome the Hibernian Orchestra to Waterford for a celebratory 20th birthday concert on Saturday 3rd December at 8 pm in Christ Church Cathedral. Founded in 1981, the Dublin based Hibernian Orchestra (formerly the Hibernian Chamber Orchestra) is now recognized as the leading voluntary orchestra in Ireland.

The players come from a variety of backgrounds: as well as music teachers and music students, the orchestra includes many pre-professionals, musicians pursuing other careers and, increasingly, players who were trained across the world and who now reside and work in Ireland.

Review: Dublin Guitar Quartet

Waterford Music hosted the contemporary Dublin Guitar Quartet as part of Music Network in the Large Room City Hall. At times the concert was neither melodic nor interesting but a beautiful Eric Sweeney composition Prism and a blissful Part Summa made it a pleasant evening.

The Quartet attracted a new younger audience who are not as devoted to melody as many others are and they showed their appreciation for tonal Ligeti and complex Glass.
