It was great to see the De La Salle College Senior Choir compete so well in the Derry Millennium Centre on RTE1 in the All Island School Choir of the Year competition. Unfortunately, the Dublin Wesley Choir, Ballinteer under their conductor Helen Doyle won out in the end (they were runners-up last year).

The De La Salle boys did themselves and Waterford proud before a distinguished audience that included our new President Higgins who made a lovely heart-filled speech about the future of Ireland.

Lismore to Turn Gaelic for TG4 Competition

Lismore is preparing to go head to head with twelve towns across the country in a challenge to win the title of Ireland’s top Irish speaking town in a brand new competition being hosted and filmed by TG4.

Lismore has qualified for ‘The G Team’ TG4’s new 10 part series where non-Gaeltacht communities compete against each other for the opportunity to call themselves G-Team champions 2011 and win a €40,000 Foras na Gaeilge prize to use to promote their local area.

Portlaw woman Ronnie Moore was the first contestant in the Waterford series which was broadcast on Monday night.

Speaking about her experiences after seeing the show, Ronnie, who works as a project manager with Waterford Leader Partnership, said she very much enjoyed the fun of the show.

‘Tannery Paul’ begins TV series

Our very own world renowned master chef, Paul Flynn of the Tannery Restaurant, launched the first of his eight part weekly series “Paul Flynn Irish Food’’ on our RTE One television screens last night (Tuesday). This new TV series is a nostalgic look back by Paul on growing up with food in rural Ireland, and we will see him through the series embracing home cooking at its very best as well as giving it a very interesting modern twist.

As the excitement gathers and the city decks itself out for the return of the Tall Ships it was great to catch the ITV programme about the Cornish, Port Isaac shanty group Fisherman’s Friends who are making the charts and putting sea shanties back in the big time.

Sir Alan Sugar is back on BBC1 with The Apprentice and this time he’s not offering a job in his organisation, but £250,000 sterling to set up a company that he will own half of and the winner will be part employed with Sir Alan giving him the cash. We will have lots of suits, powers dressers and ego high achievers for the next twelve weeks and already the emphasis is on fun and psychological torture.

Kennedy’s

Can’t see what all the fuss was about with the mini-series The Kennedy’s now relegated to the History Channel. I have seen a few episodes; it’s as good as The Tudors or such history-lite with a dash of naughty and nothing to frighten the pets. Don’t mind about the accent, and enjoy Tom Wilkinson’s wicked Joe Kennedy snr. Greg Kinnear is a great JFK and he has the accent down pat. Katie Holmes didn’t impress so far but wait until the shooting. A lot of the filming seems very low budget close-up, hand-held stuff but €25 million was spent in the making and it seems to have offended Kennedy supporters, so it got shunted off to a cable channel but it could have a lot of reruns elsewhere. It is, I suppose, closer to Henry Tudor than might be first thought.

TV Review: The Killing

Now that the ten week Danish subtitled The Killing is over some people are talking about it as if it was some watershed or new direction in television. The whodunit that kept them all guessing on BBC4, well that is the half million or so who watched it. About 6 million watched Kenneth Branagh’s Wallander.

Mostly, I’ve had little time for James Nesbitt in most of his roles since Cold Feet, but with the arrival of Monroe on UTV. I am so impressed as Nesbitt is wonderful as neurosurgeon Monroe, an arrogant, exasperating genius, a little bit like House. But Monroe has something else as well as having Sarah Parish as the rival doctor, a snappy heart surgeon

Legal Blonde

Here’s a new gowns and gangsters series Silk on BBC1 with gritty Maxine Peake as an up and thrusting barrister who wants to be a Queen’s Council. She is from up North and edgy in sunglasses and dodgy in her dealings as she competes with posh male barrister Rupert Penry Jones who’s a toffee – a Rupert but good looking and so refined.

They battle for cases, for promotion and no doubt will do respectable in the ratings. Never going to be a Rumpole or a Kavanagh QC but there always seems to be a slot for wigs and legal jargon.
