Metalman, Waterford’s newest brewing company, has bucked the recessionary trend by setting up shop in the city in recent weeks.

The company, fittingly launched in Tramore last March given the source of its name, is going from strength to strength, with punters flocking to sample their signature pale ale.

The brainchild of Rathculliheen native Gráinne Walsh and her partner Tim Barbar from the United Kingdom, the brand is already making an impact beyond the county’s boundaries.

The play, according to director James Power, will raise more questions than it answers with the audience.

“All Fall Down, which was written by Ciaran Murphy, is a two-person, one-act play set in an isolated, rural mountainous area. It’s a dark tragicomedy that will draw the audience behind the curtains of the private lives of brother and sister, Conor and Eva Healy. Younger sibling Conor is a blind man, a polemicist of global proportions who is being cared for by his older, more straight-laced sister. Conor relies on Eva for help in much of his day-to-day life, while she seems to be doing her best for him. However, all is not what it seems! The play explores what happens when their relationship begins to deteriorate and also raises the topical issue of what social supports are available in this country for people with disabilities – be they mental or physical in nature. Furthermore, who will care for the Carer?

“It’s like a war zone” – that was the claim made by Templars Hall resident Michelle Joyce following the latest spate of anti-social behaviour now sadly synonymous with the Waterford city estate.

Anti-social behaviour in Templars Hall has arguably reached an all-time high, coinciding with the commencement of the new academic year in Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT).

An exasperated Ms Joyce, who chairs the estate’s Residents’ Association, claimed that residents have been virtually abandoned by Waterford City Council and the local Gardaí in their ‘hour of need’.

“The Council and the Gardaí have left the estate to ruin itself,” she claimed.

Rock in your Frock one last time . . . it’s all about self-expression!!!

Trash . . . is a style of photography that contrasts elegant clothing with an environment in which it is out of place. It is generally shot in the style of fashion and glamour photography. “Trash. . .” is the art of creativity of quality clothes to bring into being a new artwork that the ‘‘model’ would be proud to display on their wall. Trash . . . is all about limitless expression. This will normally be portrayed in a sequence of images or simply a single image.

The form of style should reflect the person’s personality, however the ‘‘model’’ has to have complete confidence with the creative process as well as the skill and expertise of the photographer to brave such a photoshoot.

They travelled to the Ploughing Championships as part of their science course. There was a great atmosphere as most of the students had never been to the championships before and they were very excited to see what it was all about. It was a fun experience for all the students. There were many different stalls to view from food stands to clothes stands to machinery and much much more. There was also horse ploughing in the fields opposite the main field. There were livestock tents with cows, bulls, sheep and pigs in them. It was very interesting for many of the students because some of them had never seen or touched a bull/cow before. Overall it was a very enjoyable day for all and the weather was good which made the day more enjoyable.

Kill and Portlaw will have to meet again to decide the destination of the East Junior ‘B’ football final after they played out an exciting draw last Saturday evening.

In the end, Portlaw needed the sharp-shooting of centre-forward Niall Fitzpatrick to force the replay and it was his late point that necessitated the replay.

Portlaw got off to a great start in this game and a goal from Niall Fitzpatrick in the first quarter helped them open up a three point lead in their opponents.

However, Kill got back into the game in the 17th minute when a 30 yard wind-assisted free from Peter Kirwan went all the way to the Portlaw net.

This was followed by a point from full-forward Anton Lennon which allowed Kill to go in at half-time with a one-point lead.

Fitzpatrick kept Portlaw in the game with his deadly finishing and they led as the game went into the final quarter.

Kieran Jackson’s progression in the tough world of Triathlon has been startling since he competed in the event for the first time just two years ago.

Since finishing second in the Spokes Triathlon in Tramore in August 2009, Kieran has progressed to the point where he secured a place on Triathlon Ireland’s Junior Development Squad having competed with distinction at the Talent Identification Day in April.

His third place finish at the recent British Super Series in Sunderland, where he finished just behind European champion Myles Burton, confirmed his status as an athlete of potential and the young Tramore teenager has his sights firmly set on realising that potential over the next few years.

The Triathlon is a relatively new sport to the Olympic Games having been introduced in Sydney in 2000. It’s a multi-sport event involving the completion of three endurance events. The popular form of Triathlon involves swimming, cycling and running over various distances. The Olympic distances for the event are 1.5k swim, 40km cycle and 10k run.

A civic reception which marked the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the United States was held in City Hall on Monday night in City Hall, with ‘first responders’ from Ground Zero in attendance.

The reception was hosted primarily thanks to the work of local master engraver Sean Egan, who worked with Waterford Crystal for 35 years and has sculpted several September 11th-themed pieces.

This led Chairman Dan Browne to describe the 105,000 passengers (2009: 112,000) who passed through the Airport last year as “a positive outturn”.

In his Chairman’s Statement, Mr Browne states that the restrictions in Irish and British airspace due to Iceland’s volcanic ash cloud, coupled with poor end of year weather, had proven significant contributors to the decline.
