That Ireland came so close to victory on Sunday last said as much for the strength of the team’s character as it did for Wales’s inability to convert territory and possession into points.

By half-time, somehow, Ireland led 10-5, despite making twice as many tackles as their opponents and crossing into the Welsh 22 on just one occasion, compared to 14 visits at the other end.

How true last week’s posting from Thomond Park now rings and how good it feels to be proven right about a hunch I’ve had for this Munster side all season long.

There have been many wonderful days on the road in Europe for a team which delightfully continues to defy perceived logic.

But last Saturday’s win in Milton Keynes, just as Perpignan away proved to be two years ago, when every rugby ‘expert’ foresaw defeat for Munster that night too, was particularly sweet.

Kilfeacle 19-Waterpark 3
Waterpark suffered another league defeat in Kilfeacle last Sunday in a game played in poor conditions.

Munster Junior League – Division 0ne
Kilfeacle 19-Waterpark 3
Waterpark suffered another league defeat in Kilfeacle last Sunday in a game played in poor conditions.
Waterpark lost out half Donal Kavanagh with a shoulder injury after 10 minutes, Jarred Dunbar replaced him.
John Flynn kicked a penalty after 15 minutes for the visitors’ good work by the backs.
The Waterpark defence was coping with what Kilfeacle had to offer. The score line at half time read 3-0.
About 10 minutes into the second half some good play had Waterpark attacking in the Kilfeacle 22 when a needless penalty saw a Waterpark player was sent to sin bin.
The home side took full advantage of this with their forwards taking a hold of the game and scoring three tries without rely to seal the win.
One positive from the game was the performance for David O’Donoghue who was making his first start with the senior team.
Waterpark now have a few weeks off with the next game down for the middle of January, this will help the side as many players are out either injured or carrying injuries.

AIL Under 21 league
Waterpark 0 Dophlin 16
League Leaders Dophlin proved to be too strong for the 21’s in Ballinakill last Saturday.
Despite the score line Waterpark gave a good as they got for most of the game.
The difference between the sides was the forward power Dolphin could call on.

Under 17 League Final
Waterpark 17 Dungravan 0
Waterpark claimed the East Munster under 17 league title last Sunday.
Waterpark got off to a good start with a penalty from Gareth Molloy.
A good defensive display in the first half kept Dungravan scoreless despite playing with the aid of the wind.
Waterpark dominated the second half with Daniel O’Driscoll and Brian Kenny scored a try apiece with Gareth Molloy kicked the converts. A few more tries could have been scored only for some indecision when near the try line.

Under 15 League
Waterpark A 19 Fethard 17
A good win for the home side with James Keisery kicking a last minutes conversion to win the game.
Tries from Robbie Walsh with James Keisery kicked 2 conversions.
Waterford City 5 Waterpark B 10
The Waterpark development side gained a good win last Sunday away to Waterford City.

Under 13 League Final
Waterpark 24 Thurles 0
Tries scored by Stephen Jones, Harry Donnelly, Brian Walsh and Glen Kavanagh who also kicked two conversions.
The team set a record for the East Munster League as they did not concede a single score in their entire league campaign.
A great achievement for any team, well done to all involved.

Waterpark 17: Galbally 11

Waterpark got their league campaign back on track last Sunday with a hard fought victory over Galbally.

Waterpark started brightly with a penalty after two minutes from John Flynn.

Donal Kavanagh added a drop goal on four minutes.

Galbally were soon level with two penalties after Waterpark were caught offside and for not releasing in the tackle.

Galbally had an edge in the scrums and their pack was winning the battle upfront. However when Waterpark moved the ball wide the home team looked the more dangerous. With five minutes remaining on the clock in the first half a very high and dangerous tackle on Collie Walsh by the Galbally centre led to a red card.

A try in injury time ended Waterpark’s unbeaten run in the league.

Waterpark began this game in good fashion with two John Flynn penalties giving the visitors a six point lead.

Skibbereen hit back with a try from wing forward Declan Coppinger to leave the score at 6-5.

Paul Hackett was sent to the sin bin for a high tackle and soon after the Waterpark scrum came under increased pressure from the big Skibbereen pack.

The Cork side had a lot of possession but could not convert their efforts in to points with the visitors putting in good work in defence.

Just on half time Flynn kicked another penalty to relived the pressure on Waterpark’s defence and give the away side a 9-5 lead.

Waterpark maintained their unbeaten run in the league with a 24-11 victory over Old Christians in trying conditions last Sunday.

Playing against the elements in the first half Waterpark got off to a dream start when from a lineout on the Christians five metre line Ally McCormack emerged with the ball to score the games opening try. Conor Mangan kicked the penalty for the home side to leave the score at 5-3 after 10mins. Some good work by the forwards led to a penalty opportunity after 30mins but John Flynn was wide with this effort, however he made amends ten minutes later with a penalty into the wind after Christians were caught offside in midfield.

Waterpark led at the interval 8-3 having played into the wind.

Douglas 8; Waterford City 21

Sunday last was a terrible day for rugby with both driving rain and wind but City ground out an important win on the road to maintain their third position on the table after three games played.

It was the pack which laid the foundations for the win getting the upperhand in the set piece and City’s kicking game was far superior especially in the second half when needed most.

Douglas played with the wind advantage in the first half but only managed one score from a penalty early on. City defended well generally in the half being well marshalled by scrum half Liam McCarthy and some lovely angled kicking from Aaron Foskin against the wind.

From a rare visit into the Douglas ‘22’ hooker Colin Lynch scored a try in the corner after the forwards hammered away at the Douglas line which eventually wilted. City kept that lead of 5-3 to half time and now had wind advantage.

Waterford City Ladies defeated Fermoy last weekend by five points to nil in a match played in horrendous conditions.

Fermoy came into the game unbeaten for over a year but were kept firmly pinned down in the early stages in their own half with some good kicking from Orla O’Neill and great tackling and counter rucking from all 15.

This pressure eventually paid dividends as City won the ball back from a Fermoy knock-on and from the resulting scrum City held onto the ball and went through phase after phase which eventually put second row Patrice Barrett over the try line for the only score in the game.
