Payne relief

Waterford’s Jimmy Payne hugs Belfast boxer Ryan Burnett after he won the light-flyweight gold medal at the inaugural World Youth Olympics in Singapore last Wednesday.

No Kil’ joy

Coming down off the side of Cruachán like a bat out of hell (after going up the Máma Road like I was givin’ Meatloaf a carry) the Sean Kelly Challenge meant I missed Sunday’s Sport, but you’d have to feel sorry for Kildare

Thorny ditch

Concerning this column (‘Waterford hurling is at a crossroads’, Aug 20) emailer Jack Richards makes the following point, with which plenty would agree I’m sure: Let’s face facts. Tipperary had the edge.

Forristal success merits positive vision

Last weekend’s Tony Forristal Cup triumph by Waterford’s Under-14 hurlers, beating Kilkenny in the final to claim the Déise’s second cup in four years, might be viewed as mere chickenfeed by some.
Magic memories: celebrating a goal against Tipperary in the 2006 All-Ireland Hurling quarter-final. “Big Dan Shanahan was sublime,” wrote Tom Humphries in that year’s ‘Season of Sundays’ (Sportsfile), “his personal tally of 1-5 failing to reflect his overall contribution or the sweet nature of every score he took.” Dan simplified things afterwards: “We knew what we were capable off. We weren’t thinking negative. We’re told to think positive the whole time.” Were it only that way now... | Photo: Ray McManus

Dan did Déise proud

Apart from the cranks who can’t stand a bit of crest-clutching, the reason so many people took to Dan Shanahan — and not just here in Waterford, but throughout Ireland — was because he was, and is, the salt of the earth.

System Addict

In a recent ‘Sunday Times’ profile, John Mullane more or less conceded he isn’t a massive fan of Fitzgerald’s tactics.

‘Spent Force’?

For all that went wrong, Fitzgerald is still happy he did all he could.
