South Kilkenny Historical Society presents a lecture ‘The Waterford – New Ross Railway Line’ Speaker: Mr Ernie Shepherd. Date: Thursday, March 27th, 2014. Time: 8pm. Venue: The Rhu Glenn Country Club. Hotel Admission: €5 (members free). Although the idea of a railway line between New Ross and Waterford was first mooted in 1878, work on the line did not begin until 1899. Progress was slow and the line did not open until 27th April 1904, with through trains commencing in the summer of that year. There was one intermediate station, located at Aylwardstown, Glenmore, Co. Kilkenny and when in use this line brought many Kilkenny hurling supporters to Dublin for Leinster final day.
