Carrick Swan supporters club
The Supporters Club had their annual members’ draw last Saturday night in Butler’s Bar, John St. At this stage we would like to thank Veronica and the staff for all their help in hosting the event. A great crowd turned out for a fabulous evening’s entertainment; first off was the draw, and prizewinners were as follows: Maurice Grace, Paul Keane, MJ Russell, James Hogan, Darren Fahey, Caroline O’Dwyer, Nicky Power, Maureen O’Halloran, Tom Walsh, and Leanne Lonergan. We congratulate all of the above. Our ever successful U21 hurlers then received their championship medals to rapturous applause. Behind every good team are the men on the line, and we thank Larry, Thomas and William for all their help. The highlight of the evening however was undoubtedly the Lifetime Achievement Award, and this year it went to one of the Swan club’s favourite sons, William ‘Axel’ Healy. William served his club with distinction down through the years and featured on championship winning sides of 1958/59. He was a noted exponent of the art of overhead striking and many have testified to his remarkable skill as a hurler; however, when our club went through troubled times in the 60s it was people like Axel who remained and made the club what it is today. Amongst his many attributes is that of humility, and he is certainly a role model for all. He was quite rightly accorded a standing ovation on the night. Congratulations, Axel, and many years of continued good health. The title of the ‘Singing Swan’ for 2008 goes to Kevin Walsh, whose impersonation of Oasis wooed the judges. The club would like to also congratulate our own Bernard O’Neill on his magnificent achievements in the national athletics meeting recently; he came first in the long jump and third in the sprint (like a good wine he gets better with age).
Other Notes
Letters will shortly be sent out to all our members regarding membership, so please take note. The club would also appeal to parents, in particular, to take a greater interest in your children by helping out our overstretched juvenile section. They really do need more assistance. The date of our AGM is fixed for Monday, March 3rd, at 8.00pm in the old clubhouse. We extend our sympathy to all members who have suffered bereavement recently, and in particular to our hardworking treasurer Terry on the death of her mother.
