Four public payphones to be removed in Carrick
Eircom has decided to remove four public payphones located in Carrick Beg, Collins Park, John Street and at the Post Office.
Eircom Regional Payphone Manager Seamus Culbert has written to the Town Clerk giving reasons for the company’s action.
The market for payphones has been in serious decline over the last number of years, the letter notes, mainly due to the proliferation of mobile phones, he noted.
Based on usage levels there are insufficient grounds for the retention of the payphones at the four locations as there has been very little public response to retain these payphones which confirms a lack of demand for the service.
Mr Culbert confirmed that the public payphone located outside the Garda Station and the two on Main Street will remain available for use by the public.
