The cot building tradition alive and well in Carrick
Pictured are a group of local men associated with Carrick’s river heritage who were engaged in building six traditional boats (cots) over the winter at Carrick Beg under the voluntary direction of designer Pat Drohan and John Dwyer.
This was a notable achievement which should be accorded public attention and appreciation. The fishing cot (named from the Irish ‘coite’) has been used on the lower Suir since time immemorial.
In association with last weekend’s Clancy Brothers Festival, one of the new boats is currently being exhibited at Carrick-on-Suir Heritage Centre, together with a slide show of photographs by Martina Coady illustrating the boat-building process.
The week-long exhibition opened on Friday last and all are welcome.
