In the election home straight

Little more than a week to go to polling day in the June 5th local elections and here in Dungarvan the canvassing and campaigning is steadily building towards a peak.

What we know for certain is that there will be at least three new faces on the nine member Town Council as a consequence of the decision of outgoing Cllrs. Michael O’Riordan (Ind), Nuala Ryan(FF), and Fiachra O’Ceilleachair(Lab) to stand aside. All three were made suitable presentations when they attended their final Council meeting on Monday night of last week.

Between them they have well in excess of half a century of loyal service to the town, and we the ordinary citizens have every right to be proud of their respective contributions over the years. All three are wished the very best in their lives outside of active politics.

There are twelve candidates seeing the nine Town Council seats, including newcomers Ciara Conway(Lab), Denise Radley(Fine Gael), and Independents Brendan O’Brien and Donal McGovern.

In the six seat Dungarvan electoral area of the County Council there are ten candidates, including all of the seven outgoing councillors elected in 2009. However with on e seat less on offer this time it means that there will be at least one casualty among the seven. Interesting to say the very least.
