Shortlisted for Volunteer of the Year

Volunteer Ireland is delighted to announce that John Power, Chairman of the Dunmore East Tidy Towns has been listed among the 30 volunteers for the Volunteer Ireland Awards 2013. Ireland’s Volunteer of the Year and 10 overall Category Awardees will be announced at a gala Volunteer Ireland Awards Ceremony in Dublin City Hall on December 5th, International Volunteer Day. His citation reads as follows:  “John has been the Chairman of the Dunmore East Tidy Towns Committee for three years. Within a year of setting up the committee, John had engaged a team of volunteers for regular clean ups.  John takes part in all the clean up tasks – whether it be clearing unsightly ditches, making people aware of dog soiling or watering the community flowers – not to mention all of the administration duties that come with the role. John has inspired the people of Dunmore East to take a pride in their village. He has worked tirelessly both in organising events and taking part in hands-on clean ups in the town.  The village is a tourist destination and John’s work has benefited not only the community of Dunmore East, but also all of the local businesses.” Anne Power nominated John for a Volunteer Ireland Award. She said: “John is a one man whirlwind in Dunmore East. He has more energy and ‘get up and go’ than anyone else I know. He is constantly working on behalf of the community, taking on extremely challenging Tidy Town projects. If it was not for his hard work, motivation, and ‘can do’ attitude, Dunmore East Tidy Towns would not have achieved a fraction of what they have been able to under John’s leadership.”
