Heritage Week in Tullahought
We were most welcome in Tullahought on Friday night last when the local community group launched their heritage week (organised by the Tullahought Heritage Council and the community group).
The events kicked off with an official opening on Friday at 8pm with a wine and cheese reception in the Tullahought community centre. This coincided with official opening of the art exhibition.
At 8.30pm, there was a Bat Walk which went down to the pond, organised by Bat Conservation Ireland. On returning there was music and dancing in the community hall with a traditional session which would make the stones dance, performed by musicians drawn from the immediate and adjoining district.
On Saturday 21st, the art exhibition was opened to all from 3pm to 8.30pm. A lecture was delivered at 8.30pm by Aighleann O Shaughnessy, senior architect with the National Monuments Branch, OPW, entitled ‘National Monuments in State Ownership in the vicinity of Tullahought’. Sunday saw the art exhibition continue to 5.30pm and at 11am in the local sports field, the Mike Williams Memorial Shield featured an U12 hurling and camogie blitz.
At 2pm a bus tour of historical sites within the vicinity of Tullahought took place, with GAA Gael and local historian Jimmy Walsh giving all a great commentary on all the splendid areas of interest. There was a walk of Kilmacoliver Loop at 3pm.
