Heritage Notes
Attention all Local History enthusiasts. Would you like to learn more about your locality and region and earn a university diploma in the process? If so, you are invited to attend an open information evening at the Dunhill Multi-Education Centre on Thursday August 26th from 6 to 9 pm. The course is a two year one on a part time basis.
Ms Joanne Rothwell, Waterford’s well known county archivist, will give a talk on 19th century literary and debating societies “Portlaw and the Wider World,” at Portlaw heritage centre on Tuesday 24th August at 8pm as part of our celebration of Heritage Week 2010. This promises to be an interesting evening, dealing with Portlaw literary society and its connection to the wider world of literary and debating societies. All are welcome and entrance is free of charge.
Plans are in motion for this year’s “Fair in the Square” which promises to be even better. Proceeds are for the Martin Hospital, Portlaw – residential home for the elderly.
Opened in 2006, the objective of the heritage centre is to establish an archive of the industrial, social and cultural history of Portlaw. The old dispensary provides a focal point for the preservation and conservation of our unique legacy. New members will be made very welcome. The heritage centre will be open to the public on the last Sunday of every month from 3-5pm, all are welcome.
