St. John’s Pastoral Centre

A meeting will take place in the St. John’s Pastoral Centre, John’s Hill, on Wednesday, 20th February at 8:00pm on the theme: “Youth Ministry in the Parish.” The presenter will be Kate Acton. Kate is Diocesan Youth Director for the Archdiocese of Armagh. She has been involved in the implementation of the Armagh Diocesan Youth Council’s strategic plan, including the development of parish ministry projects, the planning of liturgy with young people and the organisation of diocesan youth pilgrimages. Prior to this, Kate worked as a community based youth worker in inner city Belfast, and worked in her home parish in the evening time. Over the years, Kate’s home parish of St. Colmcille’s, in Belfast has run a variety of youth ministry initiatives within the parish structure of a parish pastoral council. Kate will talk about her experience in youth ministry, both at parish and diocesan level, and will give examples of successful initiatives she has been involved in. Pilgrimage To Holy Land

Fr Conor Kelly, Sacred Heart parish, will be the Spiritual Director on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in October 2008. The 11-day pilgrimage will depart from Cork Airport on Wednesday 1st October and fly directly to the Holy Land. The pilgrims will return to Ireland on 11th October. The cost of the pilgrimage is €1,225 p.p.s and will include half-board accommodation and all taxes. For further information contact Fr Kelly on 051-843756.

Music for Mass

Music for the 11:15am Mass in the Sacred Heart Church on Sunday, 10th February will be provided by the Waterford Peace Choir and all are welcome to attend.

Baptisms

The Sacred Heart Parish welcome into its Christian Community: Dylan Thomas Robert Brown Lavery, who was baptised in the Sacred Heart Church and congratulate parents, godparents and extended families on this joyous occasion.

Parish Social

Tickets are currently on sale for the second annual Sacred Heart Parish Social, which will take place on Friday, 15th February at 8:00pm in the Parish Centre. The attendance number is limited to 100 people – so early purchase of tickets is advisable as these will be sold on a first-come basis and cost €15 each. Music on the night will be provided by C & M Sound and catering by Mary Grimes. Last year’s social was a most enjoyable evening of entertainment and dancing, and many are looking forward to Friday 15th for what promise to be another great night on the parish social calendar.

Resource Centre

Sacred Heart Family Resource Centre is a charitable organisation that works with communities in the Sacred Heart Area of Waterford City.

We are holding a Table Quiz on Tuesday, 12th February, at 8.30pm in The Showboat Bar & Lounge, The Glen, Waterford. Table of 4 people = €20. There will also be a raffle with lots of prizes.

Bereavement

It is with deep regret we record the sad passing of Mrs. Bridget ‘Biddy’ Kehoe, nee Madigan, Cypress Grove, Viewmount, and formerly of St. John’s Park, who passed to her eternal reward on Saturday, 26th January. Condolences are extended to her family, relatives and friends. Her removal took place from St. Patrick’s Hospital Chapel on Monday evening to the Sacred Heart Church, The Folly. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Tuesday, 29th January, after which, Bridget was laid to rest in St. Otteran’s Cemetery, Ballinaneeshagh. May she rest in peace.

Trocaire Campaign 2008

Trocaire Boxes are available at the doors of the Sacred Heart Church, and all families are urged to take one home and use it to support the work of Trocaire on behalf of the Irish people in the developing world. The Trocaire Campaign for 2008 will direct its attention to the issue of climate change, and will remind us that the adverse effects of climate change, such as drought, unpredictable or unreliable rainfall or flooding – that these weather condition affect the poor of the world most of all. Two thirds of the world’s poorest people live in rural areas and depend on small-scale farming and regular rainfall. It is predicted that in the next 15 years, in Africa alone, up to 250 million people will be facing severe water shortages. But with your help and support, Trocaire can make a “Climate for Change” this Lent.

Sacred Heart AGM

The Sacred Heart Juvenile GAA Club held their Annual General Meeting in the Butler Community Centre on Friday, 25th January. Club chairman Noel Kelly welcomed all present to the meeting and outlined the club’s activities over the past year. It was also a successful year for the club on the playing field with the Under 16 Football team winning both the Eastern Championship and the County Championship. The Under 14 Hurling team were defeated in the County Final; however, the Under 12 Football team won the Tramore Football Tournament. Club treasurer Noel Kelly outlined the financial position of the club and paid tribute to the committee members and the parents who helped out with various fundraising events during the past year. Noel pointed out that it takes in excess of €15,000 per year to keep the club running. The following officers were elected: Chairman Noel Kelly, Assistant Chairman Joe Finerty, Secretary Rebecca Drohan, Treasurer Noel O’Connor, PRO Michael Dee, Committee members, Ken Flynn, Billy Kelly, Mick Daly, Damien Byrne, Connie Jacob, John Brown, PJ Shanahan and Darren Knox.

Monthly Market

The first monthly ‘country style market’ for 2008 will take place on Sunday, 10th February in the Ardkeen Quality Foodstore carpark. All the usual stallholders will be back with plenty of fresh locally produced products available.

The market became very popular and gained an excellent reputation with customers in 2007 and we wish all the stallholders and organisers of the monthly market continued success in 2008.
