Mrs. Alice Gahan
It is with deep regret we record the sad passing of Mrs. Alice Gahan, (nee Phelan), St. Ursula’s Terrace, Waterford, who passed to her eternal reward on Sunday, 4th February. Her removal took place from Thompson’s Funeral Home, Barrack Street, on Tuesday evening to St. John’s Church, Parnell Street. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Wednesday,7th February after which Alice was laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ballygunner. Condolences are extended to her family, relatives and friends. May she rest in peace.
Mr. Bernard Murphy
We record the sad passing of Mr Bernard “Bennyâ ¬ Murphy, Carrickphilip, Kill, County Waterford, and formerly of 7 The Cork Road, Waterford. Benny passed to his eternal reward on Tuesday, 6th February. His removal took place from Waterford Regional Hospital on Wednesday evening to St. John’s Church, Parnell Street. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Thursday, 8th February after which Benny was laid to rest in St. Otteran’s Cemetery, Ballinaneeshagh. Condolences are extended to his family, relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.
Service of Commitment
The boys’ from St. Declan’s sixth-classes were in attendance at the 6:15pm Vigil Mass on Saturday evening last for their Service of Commitment, which is part of their preparation for their Confirmation. As always the boys’ were very well prepared and were a credit to their school.
St. Declan’s Donate ¬2.688
Well done to all the boys’ and teachers in St. Declan’s School, Water Street, who raised the sum of ¬2.688 through their “No Uniform Dayâ ¬, the money will go to a very worthy cause the “Dunmore East Trawler Tragedy Appeal.â ¬ A raffle was also held in the Wander Inn, Johnstown, on Sunday night last with the proceeds going towards the Appeal.
St Declan’s Indoor Hurling
The first round of the Primary Schools Indoor Hurling Competition was held in the Butler Community Centre, St. John’s Park, on Wednesday, 7th February. In the first game St. Declan’s had a very comprehensive victory over St. Paul’s winning on a scoreline of St. Declan’s 12 goals – St. Paul’s 2 goals. In the second game St. Declan’s faced their old rivals St. Stephen’s, and this game proved to be much harder and closer affair for St. Declan’s with St. Stephen’s pushing all the way. However, in the end St. Declan’s were the stronger, winning on a scoreline St. Declan’s 8 goals – St. Stephen’s 5 goals. In the final game St. Declan’s faced Ballygunner, and in this game St. Declan’s played some very fine hurling and finished on a scoreline St. Declan’s 12 goals – Ballygunner 6 goals. St. Declan’s qualified for a place in the Eastern Finals, which will take place on Wednesday, 14th February. St. Declan’s Team: James Grogan, Aidan Lawless, Shane Hanlon, Jack McCarthy, Aaron O’Connor, Jamie O’Regan, Conor Hogan, David Hogan and Conor Murphy.
Reached Harty Cup Final
Congratulations to the De La Salle College hurling team who gained a place in the final of the Dr. Harty Cup with a one-point win over Thurles C.B.S last Saturday. There was great excitement leading up to the semi-final game with a large group of supporters travelling to New Inn, Co. Tipperary, for a very exciting game of hurling with the De La Salle boys’ winning on a scoreline: De La Salle 3-7 – Thurles C.B.S. 0-15. Best of luck to the lads in the final against St. Flannan’s, it would be great to see the Dr. Harty Cup coming to the College and Waterford.
St. John’s Pastoral Centre
“Deepening your Spiritual Lifeâ ¬ is a four week course on Spirituality, which incorporates Prayer and Meditation, Reflection and Input. The course will start on Wednesday 28th February at 8:00pm with “Meister Eckhartâ ¬ as a guide to meditation today. Week 2 – Wednesday, 7th March, “Celtic Spiritualityâ ¬ – Drinking from Our Own Well. Week 3 – Wednesday, 14th March – “Cistercian Spiritualityâ ¬ – Sr. Marie Fahy. Week 4 – Wednesday, 21st March – “Finding an anchor in an age of anxiety and restlessnessâ ¬ – Sr. Noirin O’Shea. Each evening will begin at 8:00pm and end at 9:30pm. Once again it is a reminder of what our Irish Friars are endeavouring to do for those among whom they work in Zimbabwe. It is also a very practical means of providing them with a very necessary financial help.

Praying with St. Luke in Lent: These are a series of talks on Scriptures directed by Fr. Ultan McCaffery O.F.M. It will start on Monday, 26th February with “To Ask – To Receiveâ ¬ (Luke 11). Monday, 5th March “To Repent – To Grow (Luke 13). Monday, 12th March “To Come In – To Stay Outâ ¬ (Luke 15). Monday, 26th March “To Seek – To Saveâ ¬ (Luke 19).
