Amenity Site at Tramore

Dear Sir,

The Civic Amenity Site at Riverstown, Tramore has been closed by Waterford County Council. The town with a population of about 10,000 and at least equal to that of Dungarvan is thus left without an essential piece of infrastructure and we are invited to travel to Ballinamuck, Dungarvan to deposit items which we previously deposited free of charge at the Tramore site. A round trip of approx. 60 miles can hardly be described as a free service with petrol costs at their current levels. We are also informed by Town Manager, Mr. White, in the curt notice attached to the gates of the site at Riverstown that dumping at the site is illegal and will result in prosecutions.

All citizens of the County are, by law, to be treated equally by the County Council but here again is a blatant example of the cavalier way in which we in Tramore are ignored and denigrated by the Dungarvan Mafia in favour of that town. What have our public representatives to say about it? The question posed to a member of the Town Commissioners elicited the reply that they are ‘only Town Commissioners and have no say in the matter’. Do they not have a voice to raise in defence of their own community? Why are they not shouting aloud and publicly making known the feelings of their townspeople?

And even more to the point, what about our local County Council representatives? What, if anything, have they done in this unjust treatment of Tramore. Let them publicly answer.

If the Co. Council had decided to offer a reduced service of even one day a week so that the free nature of leaving items for disposal could be maintained, at least there would be some sense in the decision because of the present economic climate. But to remove the service entirely is unjust and should be reversed in the interest of fair play to all citizens.

Yours, etc

Dick Brennan
