Householders are being urged to be on the lookout as heating oil thieves continue to target rural homes and vulnerable residents. With the sudden increase of incidents in the past few months, everyone who uses oil for their heating is advised to secure their heating oil tank and make regular checks, also to look out for elderly neighbors who live alone.
The installation of security lighting and tank alarms could deter thieves but remember any security measures to the actual tank should always be installed in consultation with your tank supplier. Also having a large dog may help. Large quantities are being stolen, which means thieves will need sizeable containers to collect oil in, or maybe a large van to take it away. If you see any suspicious persons or vehicles on your road or in your neighbour’s driveway, contact your local garda station immediately.
