RTE’s Rescue to feature Tramore tragedy

On 1 July 1999, the Irish Air Corps launched a new search and rescue helicopter service for the south east coast of Ireland. The 24 hour service had been delayed by a year and was based at Waterford Airport. It was a proud day for the defence forces and the crew did a great deal of publicity on the day.

But as that evening’s newspapers were going to press, the four man crew was already involved in a rescue mission. A pleasure craft with a sick child on board was lost in thick fog. Although the boat was eventually towed to harbour safely, the helicopter was not so lucky. It struggled to find a safe landing in the heavy fog. The tragedy that followed was one of the worst disasters in Air Corps history.

This week’s Rescue on RTE1 at 7.30pm on Sunday tells the story of the fateful night.
