Sea Views From Stella Maris
We are well and truly back with a bang after the mid-term. French day was an exciting end to last term. It’s a terrific way to bring the culture and language of France to life for our students. Well done to all involved and we look forward to next year already. The following are just some of our recent activities. Well Girl Programme (Orlaith McAuliffe).
On November 3rd a group of forty T.Y. students attended a course in the Kingfisher Health and Fitness centre, Waterford. The aim of the course was to learn different sporting skills and to arrange for instructors to teach our younger students at a later day. Our morning started off with kickboxing and self-defence, both taught by a local instructor. Throughout this lesson the students learned basic protection skills. This was followed by a thirty minute blood pumping aerobics class and by an easier lesson of Badminton. After lunch there was another self-defence lesson, this time with a foxing style. Next there was a session of hip-hop, something we all enjoyed. Last but not least there was a yoga lesson which involved learning basic skills and movements.
Christmas Shoe Box Appeal
Well done to the members of the Peace and Justice Committee who collected over a hundred boxes for the Christmas Shoebox Appeal. These boxes will find their way to children in Third World countries. Thanks to those who donated.
Concern Debates (Sinead Trainor)
In this year’s first Concern debate, Stella Maris was represented by Stephanie Howard, Marianne De Leaster, Sarah Walsh and Ruth Lawlor. The debate took place in C.B.S. Kilkenny. The motion of the debate was the E.U. is failing Africa. The Stella Maris team, captained by Stephanie Howard, opposed the motion. The girls did an amazing job on the night but unfortunately lost the debate. They were commended by the panel members who recognised their thorough preparation and delivery. Huge credit is due to Ruth Lawlor, who selflessly stepped in at the last minute for an ill team member. The debate also marks Ms. Walsh’s first time leading the team and it has to be said that she did an amazing job. All members of the team are looking forward to their next debate, against the Presentation, Waterford.
