Spotlight on Stella’s ‘Fame’

Upstairs in the lab, trying to stay awake to the soothing sounds of Mozart’s Piano Concerto drifting up from the music room is nothing new. But this term is different: every student sits bolt upright, every head bopping and every foot tapping. There is a knowing smile on each person’s face and only one word on everyone’s lips, Fame!

After the phenomenal success of Little Shop of Horrors in 2007, Stella Maris is preparing to take to the stage once more. Featured in the cast are some old hands and some new hands, under the expert direction of 5th year student and aspiring star, Anne O’ Riordan. “I’m really buzzing about the musical,” she gushed. “From my position as director, I’m lucky enough to be able to watch the show grow bigger and better every time we rehearse. The talent here is unbelievable. Prepare yourselves for the highlight of the year!”

And music maestro Damien O’ Brien is never far from the action, either. He explained how the choice of ‘Fame’ came about. “Little Shop was huge,” he told me, “but I felt it excluded all the dancers we have here in the school. And that’s not to mention that ‘Fame’ is the perfect choice for us: we don’t have many boys to play lead roles, but we do have an extremely gifted bunch of girls. We’re hoping this performance will be as much about the dancing as it is about the singing.”

So I think it is fair to say that we can expect a spectacular show! Mr Robert McCarthy, principal, has given his resounding seal of proud approval, and the date has been set for March 18th – 20th. Tickets are currently on sale from the Box Office in the Theatre Royal.

Over the coming weeks, Stella Maris plans to provide you with the latest inside gossip and behind the scenes news. We offer you an insight into the exciting lead up to the musical, from the animation in the school corridors to the word on the street. Keep an ear to the ground! Stella Maris, remember the name!
