Last term as part of our TY English class, all of 4.2 entered the University College Cork Law Faculty Essay Competition.
There was a choice of seven essay titles, as follows: “Same Sex Marriages Should Be Recognised In Irish Law”, “The Protection Of Children’s Rights in Irish Law”, “The Role Of Law in Environmental Protection”, “Civil Liberties and The War On Terror”, “Would a Stronger EU Benefit Ireland?”, “Protecting Minorities In Ireland” and “Gangland Violence: Testing The Limits of Criminal Law?” all relevant titles.
The award ceremony for the essay competition was held on January 22 in UCC. En route we went shopping in Mahon Point Shopping centre, then Cork City Gaol which tied together the theme of Law and Justice. Sports scene
After being crowned South East champions before Christmas, the Under 16 basketball team had the All-Ireland play offs in Newbridge in their sights. Unfortunately the girls were knocked out by the hosts. See next week’s sports section for full report.
Then we attended the award ceremony. Some University personnel presented lectures on the essay titles. Each lecture was fascinating although some were more interesting than others.
We all had a great day in Cork and being in UCC has made most people think about what course they would like to do.
Thanks to Ms O’Brien and Mrs Leavy. [- Stephanie Howard]
