The Maisie Bishop Memorial Swim raised some much needed funds for Waterford Hospice on Saturday last.

Sixteen swimmers braved some rough conditions to swim from Brownstown Head to the Guillamene, accompanied by a number of spotters on kayaks and bodyboards. The RNLI and Tramore Sea and Cliff Rescue were in attendance throughout, ensuring a safe event for everyone involved.

A spirited group of friends and family were waiting at the Guillamene, and the courageous swimmers were met by loud applause and shouts of encouragement from supporters on their arrival. First out of the water was Kevin Doyle, who powered through the three-mile stretch in an amazing time of 73 minutes. First lady home was Grace Doyle, who did a great time of 83 minutes. All swimmers were home and out of the water in 2.5 hours, an exceptional achievement, considering the sometimes difficult conditions faced by the swimmers, particularly the choppy waters encountered in the first half of the swim.

The swim was organised by Sarah Howard in memory of her grandmother, Maisie Bishop, who was the first recorded person to complete the swim of Tramore bay in September, 1931.

This event was another demonstration of the community spirit so prevalent throughout Tramore and Waterford and would not have been successful without the time and effort given by many people. Thankyou to the RNLI and Tramore Sea and Cliff Rescue, the kayakers and spotters, Trevor Condon for promotional design and Tramore Print for the sponsorship cards and posters. A special thanks to the swimmers and all those who donated so generously to provide vital funds needed to help Waterford Hospice continue the fantastic work they do throughout the south east region.

The swimmers were: Colin Fanning, Ian Fanning, David Smyth, Grace Doyle, Jerry Brett, Kevin Doyle, Mark Hayden, Meabh Savage, Natasha Campbell, Paul Doyle, Ruth Cahir, Sile Walsh, Stephen Doyle, Una Cummins, Colm Power and Sarah Howard.
