Tramore Gossip

Holy Cross Church

The only entrance and exit to the Church grounds for vehicles is through the Avenue from Priest’s Road. Please drive very carefully on the Avenue and park very carefully and correctly in the Church grounds. This is all in the interest of safety. We are especially concerned lest children be in any danger in the vicinity of the Church or cemetery.

Down Memory Lane

In June 1978 the first soccer report in this column highlighted Bill Goodwin’s match winning goal – a “Souness special” to marrieds victory over the singles in the annual tussle at old Graun Park. Thirty years down the line we wish his son Jim Goodwin a prosperous three year stint with his new club Huddersfield Town as we await the tussles with Stockport County and Scunthorpe United with great interest.

Action Line

Over the past thirty five years countless truck and car wheels have taken their toll on the road surface at Beech park and at this juncture, after years of patching up, a complete resurfacing is long overdue. When one considers the amount of rent collected annually, added to the tax paid by so many car/van owners resident there, it is unacceptable that some of them have to traverse a damaging pothole located right outside their gateway.

Most parents travelling up or down the Upper Branch Road on foot have their children on the inside of the footpath away from speeding traffic. Please take care as the overgrown shrubbery is hiding some nasty briars which could cause an eye injury and some of the placid looking shrubs have long thin thorns which could have the same painful effect. Well done to the two young true sportsmen who hacked away a particularly nasty briar with their trusty hurleys!

Tramore Dart League

Well we ultimately arrived at the final night of another busy but most entertaining season when we held a singles competition in the Tramore Bay Hotel in aid of the Walsh Twins Fire Tragefy Fund. A good ground attended to support such a worthy cause and once again the standard of darts very good indeed amongst our younger players. John Higgins, who was part of the winning GAA team the pervious week, emerged as a worthy winner after a close game against David Green, eventually winning 2-1. The final finish was a bit of a struggle but determination prevailed and John eventually took the game and the trophy with a x4. Beaten semi-finalists were Gary Hunt and Frankie Maher. Well done to all those who participated, to Niall Bohan, for his excellent hospitality and marking, Tom Mills, Barry Cox and all the others for helping with the games, Bohan’s once again for their sponsorship. We raised over €200 on the night so well done to all concerned.

Thanks are also extended to those who donated spot prizes, The Bog’n'Bean, Fenor; Mother McHugh’s, Fenor; The Sands Hotel; The Seahorse; Murph’s Bar.

Sincere gratitude to all responsible for making this such a success in aid of a very worthy cause for such a well liked family.

So, have a good summer everyone but don’t let the darts gather too much dust as we’ll be swinging back into action again come September. There will be plenty to look forward to with such an array of talent around, we’re assured of a healthy future for Tramore Darts.

Many thanks to Angela for all the coverage of our local dart scene and fabulous co-operation throughout the long and busy season.

Benefica 2 Tramore Former Tramore Town Councillor Betty Twomey has answered – in bagfuls – current Council members who accused her of spreading falsehoods when she stated on local radio that the resort’s famous sand dunes were rubbish strewn.

The Tramore girls got their act together to level the game at half time with goals from Zoe O’Donoghue and Vanessa Ogbonna. Second half goals from Zoe O’Donoghue, Muiriosa O’Sullivan and a super goal from Captain Vicki Falconer, taking the ball inside her own half and outpacing the Benefica defence to drive an unstoppable shot past the advancing goalkeeper to give us all three points.
