The Waterford Community Based Drugs Initiative (WCBDI) is a community based drugs project that provides support for individuals, families and the wider community who are experiencing issues in relation to substance misuse. The Initiative is managed by the Waterford and South Tipperary Community Youth Services and is located in Lisduggan at the Millennium Community Building Church Road. The WCBDI has been in existence since 1998 and has been consistent in identifying and responding to the complex and evolving issues that accompanies drug use and the effects it has on families and the wider community.
One such response is to inform and empower communities to respond to such matters in a rational and evidence based manner. The WCBDI and its community volunteers have published a four page newsletter that provides information on topics such as recovery groups, un-prescribed benzodiazepine practices, drug debt intimidation responses and societal attitudes toward drug use and drug users. By doing so the community volunteers aspire to providing individuals, families and community members with factual and relevant information that will enhance their coping skills and also provide an environment and service that is person centred and non-judgmental.
Volunteers have also activated a Facebook page that will provide weekly information on a multitude of drug related topics such as the pharmalogical, cognitive and physical effects of a wide cross section of substances, information on responses and services that individuals can access such as support groups, recovery groups, harm reduction measures, abstinence based interventions, screenings and referrals to appropriate services, holistic therapies and a wide range of education and awareness programmes and events. The Facebook page is purely an information provision resource but anyone or any group that needs to contact the service can do so by calling 051-351100 / 087-2024061 or emailing the service at waterfordcbdi@wstcys.ie.
WCBDI always welcomes community members who are non-judgemental, have an interest in their community and would like to provide awareness and education to the wider community. Full training will be given and ongoing support and supervision will also be provided.
