Crucifixion art in Greyfriars

DismasGreyfriars Municipal Art Collection is fortunate to have recently received a large scale painting donated by Waterford-based artist and poet Niall Bracken.

Niall’s canvas, entitled “Dismas the Good Thief and (inset) Gestas the Bad Thief” is a strikingly original take on the New Testament crucifixion story which depicts a double portrait of the thieves crucified at either side of Jesus Christ. A Dubliner, Niall Bracken now lives in Waterford where he works as a professional artist and writer.

Niall’s painting forms the centrepiece of the exhibition “Shadows and Light” which opens to the public in Greyfriars Gallery on Saturday 16th of January 2010. The exhibition features many recent additions to the collection including “Appendicitis”, an intriguing modular box sculpture by the U.K. based Irish artist Bern Roche-Ferrally, a digital image entitled “Home of Wall Drug” by photographer Ciaran Conneely, the miniature atmospheric study “Where The Asphalt Trees Grow” by Susan Montgomery, “Interpretation 4” by Waterford based German artist Cordula Hansen, and a digital print by Kilkenny artist Maria Casey entitled “Plastic Pests”.

Also on display will be some old favourites from the collection including Dermod O’Brien’s “My Birthday Presents”, Florence McCoy’s “Rural Event” and, to brighten up these dark winter days, some lovely flower paintings by Kathleen Fox, Geraldine O’Brien, and George Pennefather.

“Shadows and Light” runs from Saturday 16th January until Saturday 13th March 2010. Admission is free and all are welcome.
