Greyfriars Gallery gets “Appendicitis”
Greyfriars Municipal Art Gallery is currently hosting “Shadows and Light”, an exhibition of twenty nine works from the Waterford Municipal Art Collection including “Appendicitis”, an intriguing modular box sculpture by the London-based Irish artist Bern Roche Farrelly.
“Appendicitis” is composed of fourteen square-shaped cardboard boxes which can be arranged or stacked in any configuration. The boxes contain printed images on all sides, including portraits of writers Oscar Wilde and J.G. Ballard, and also include cryptic pieces of text and medical imagery designed to stir each viewer’s imagination.
Born in 1979, Bern Roche Farrelly studied art in the Dublin Institute of Technology and in the Chelsea College of Art, London. He has curated a number of art projects and has participated in many group shows in Ireland and abroad, including London, Glasgow, and Athens.
The exhibition “Shadows and Light” also includes many favourites from the collection including works by Maurice MacGonigal, Patrick Stevenson, Robert Burke, and Arthur Armstrong.
“Shadows and Light” runs from until Saturday 13th March 2010.
Admission is free and all are welcome. Please note Greyfriars Municipal Gallery opening hours: Tuesday – Saturday: 11am – 5.00pm
