Jim Daly’s writings to be published

On Friday 20th August at Greyfriars Gallery in Waterford the family and friends of Jim Daly will gather to see the publication of his life’s writings titled ‘Jim Daly – The Collected Works’ and pay tribute to the big fella. The event begins at 7pm sharp.

It’s hard to believe but it’s over a year since our good friend Jim Daly went to his reward. Jim was a poet, teacher of creative writing, playwright, lighting designer, hurling fanatic, energetic pipe smoker, chairperson and founder of Red Kettle Theatre Co and much more.

Jim was a big man with a big appetite for life and fun, he disliked solemnity and stuffy occasions. With this in mind we will pay respect to Jim’s contribution to the arts in Waterford over three decades by telling a few yarns and following it up with music, fun and the craic. It will be the kind of night Jim loved.

The Collected Works are a tribute to another younger man Robert Browne originally from Ballybeg but now teaching up in Dublin. Jim was a hero for Bob and when Bob got into the arts through his involvement with Waterford Youth Arts he was immensely proud that Jim was also from Ballybeg. Bob has worked hard over the last 12 months to edit this book and he got good help from Mark Roper and Jim Nolan and so it will be published this week. Having seen a copy of the publication it is a great testament to the man with a good mix of poetry, prose, plays and tributes to Jim all for a mere €10.

The official duties on the night will be emceed by his old pal Joe Falvey, with the Mayor Mary Roche saying a few words followed by Jim O’Meara – who originally got Jim Daly into the theatre world when they both worked in the P and T. The book will then be officially launched with a few words from actor Jamie Beamish. Both Jim O’Meara and Jamie are flying over from the UK for this event.

Afterwards all are invited back to Jordan’s for Jim’s type of music with Kevin Power, Francie White and Alan Colfer and lots of special guests. Not to be missed.

It was a great night at Greyfriars – a wonderful setting and the memories of the big fella cast a warm shadow over all those there. The part that stood out for me was the short speech from his old pal, Michael Dower. The wonderful short stories of their adventures together had the audience laughing all the way to Jordan’s where a great night’s entertainment was had by one and all. Well done to all involved. I now go and read the works of me old bushie, Jim Daly!
