The Power Of Three found in Printmakers

ScatterThe Power of Three is a new Exhibition of Fine Art Original Prints by Aiseling Noone, Sylvia Hemmingway and Caroline Donohue. Each artist brings her own area of focus to the highly skilled craft of printmaking at Garter Lane Theatre Gallery.

The original print has a language and aesthetic all of its own. Many artists are drawn to printmaking because of the variety and beauty of the surfaces it is capable of yielding.

The persistence of the past in the present in relation to individual identity is the basis of Sylvia Hemmingway’s work. By microscopically investigating the surface of 100-year-old spoons she seeks to discover the secret development of a genetic code, imagining the possibility of finding a trace of the food that triggered an epigenetic change. The ‘something’ besides DNA that is capable of moving between generations is hinted at in etchings layered with metaphorical images recalling the diet and environmental experiences of previous generations.

Time is also evident in Caroline Donohue’s etchings of uncanny interiors and spaces where time has been put on hold. They draw the viewer in to a dreamlike world of imaginative possibilities. Minute details reveal private worlds of absent inhabitants and contribute to a sometimes uneasy curiosity.

Aiseling Noone uses the terminology and methodology of the garment industry, as well as the motif of the human body, to explore social issues, particularly in relation to gender inequality. Fashion jargon and sewing techniques weave their way through the work in an allegorical fashion, carrying with them the association toIn this show social issues are explored, our genetic make-up is considered and time is suspended – all through the medium of etching.

The exhibition runs until 19 October. Admission is free.
