Planet 51
The film starts with Lem, an average alien teenager who is busy getting the girl of his dreams and improving his job at the local planetarium.
American astronaut Captain Charles “Chuck” Baker lands on Planet 51 expecting to do nothing but play some golf and stick up an American flag. However when his ship lands, he is face to face with an alien town.
Unfortunately for Chuck, the media on this foreign planet depicts spacemen as organ harvesting and mind controlling monsters called ‘humaniacs’.
He runs for safety in Lem’s house so it’s up to the teen and his friends to get the astronaut back to his spaceship before General Grawl and mad scientist Professor Kipple capture and experiment on him.
The film starts very well with the initial interesting plot ‘what if WE are the aliens’ but unfortunately, it starts to drag on and becomes somewhat bland and predictable.
On the bright side, the animators created a very visually appealing alien suburbia and some of the animals they created were very funny.
One of the best characters in the film was Rover, the rock loving robot who behaves like a puppy dog. Some of the gags throughout the film are very funny.
Along with a hilarious portrayal of mad scientist Professor Kipple, by John Cleese.
All in all a feel good film with a good message about prejudices and stereotyping that will appeal visually to children and is defiantly worth watching.
