Review: Old Dogs
Just as long time friends and business partners Charlie and Dan are about to close the biggest business deal of their lives, Dan suddenly learns about the existence of his seven year old twins and must care for them while there mother spends two weeks in jail. Dan and Charlie must now meet the kid’s expectations and also seal the business deal.
I must say, Old Dogs is defiantly as funny as you’d expect a film to be that has John Travolta and Robin Williams as the main actors. However, that is just about the only good thing this film has to offer.
This film’s basic premise is that having children suddenly changes your life and your priorities. Wow, that’s a new story line. Although some of the gags are funny and entertaining, upon reflection they are just plain illogical. An example of this is that Dan is portrayed as being completely un-imaginative and unable to interact in a fun way with his children which seems so wrong considering Robin Williams is one of the best loved comedians of all time! By the way, this conflict is solved by Dan wearing an electronic suit which allows him to be controlled by Charlie who makes him jump around and hit himself in order to make his daughter laugh.
Another thing I found odd was that two children who never new of their father’s existence automatically call him Daddy.
Another one of the films rough gags was when Dan is convinced by Charlie to get a spray tan to impress the mother of his children. However, he comes out of the tanning salon bright orange and goes to the airport, where he gets called an oompa loompa, to meet (the extremely annoying) Vicki (Kelly Preston) who has an ‘old family secret’ to remove fake tan. This was obviously done just so we could see Robin Williams orange. What a poor joke. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, the two kids accidentally mix up Dad and Uncle Charlie’s medication which gives Charlie Facial Paralysis and the munchies and Dan starts to get some sort of dimension hallucinations. This was funny enough to watch the first time, but they did the exact same thing at the end of the film!!!!
This film is about as simple minded as they come. Greatly disappointing, but hey, what do you expect from the director of Wild Hogs, its just a pity John Travolta and Robin Williams had to show their faces in this mess.
