Review: The Blindside

blindsideThe Blind Side tells the true story of Michael Oher, a homeless and traumatised teenage boy whose future looked bleak until he met Leigh Anne Tuohy and her kind family who helped him become an All American football star.

When Michael was taken from his home and drug addicted mother in the city housing projects by Family Services, he was moved around from foster home to foster home until he could no longer bare it and chose to live out on the streets instead.

When his giant size was noticed by a local football coach who needed a player of his exact build, Michael was given a place in a private Christian school. It is there he meets S.J. Tuohy, the youngest of the Touhy family.

When S.J’s mother offers him to spend a night at their house, Michael is soon accepted as apart of the family and the Tuohy’s do everything to help him reach his full potential.

It wasn’t difficult to make this story inspiring. Leigh Anne Touhy’s kindness and generosity was beyond belief and Michael’s struggle to accept his sudden change of life, family and future was very moving.

Sandra Bullock played Leigh Anne Touhy, the demanding, pushy, sassy and loving interior designer and mother of two. Out of sheer generosity and good will, she opened up her home to a boy she has never met before and convinced her family to accept him as one of their own. Although this performance was defiantly much stronger than anything she has done before and miles more enjoyable than anything like ‘Miss Congeniality’, I’m not sure it was deserving of an Oscar.

I have know idea how true this film is to Michael Oher’s real life story but I thought the portrayal of the school teachers, Leigh Anne’s snobbish and wealthy friends, and the football coaches was very realistic and believable. However, I found it strange that so much of the film showed Michael with Leigh Anne and S.J. but Collins and Sean were no where to be seen.

All in all a really heart warming story about limitless generosity and one the whole family would enjoy but still un-certain about Sandra Bullock’s Oscar.
