Neville’s Centenary Festival in Hook
Neville’s of Fethard-on Sea is celebrating its centenary with a week-long celebration which kicks off on Friday, October 22nd with a night of food, music and craic.
Things swing into overdrive on Saturday, when Neville’s will host a Cookery Demonstration from Traditional Irish Cuisine expert Aonghus O’ Reilly at 4:00pm, followed by an audience with John Spillane and a four course meal.
“I’m looking forward to revisiting the sunny southeast and especially Fiodh Ard (Fethard) to play at Neville’s Centenary Festival. 100 years old lads!! Now, doing a bit of research, it’s come to my attention that the name over the door “Neville’s” was only established in the 60’s! D’ya get it?? So it’s the buildings 100 year birthday??!! Where would you get it, like??!! Anyway, we’ll get over that and have a great night on the 23rd!” says singer songwriter and music legend John Spillane:
Fourth generation Neville’s proprietor David Neville assures John (and us) that the family business is indeed 100 years old. It started life in 1910 as a shop and pub called O’Connor’s, but the family name changed to Neville in the 1960s – hence the confusion for the Cork-born music star…
The music and gourmet evenings will continue throughout the week, culminating in a special gig on Friday, October 29 with Irish music superstars The 4 of Us – of “Mary” fame – who will play a unique acoustic set featuring founding members and brothers Brendan and Declan Murphy.
“We’re going to be doing some shows in the US next year as a two-piece, and we’re using our Irish shows to prepare for that. But we’re really looking forward to the show in Neville’s – I have some fond memories of Wexford! “We’re at a really good point at the moment. Our acoustic shows are more intimate – they allow us to talk to the audience about the songs and the stories behind them. And we always make sure that we play the songs that everyone expects – because there’s no excuse for not playing the songs that people want to hear!”
Said Brendan Murphy lead singer of The 4 of Us:
Neville’s Pub and 1170 Restaurant is looking forward to welcoming people from far and near to the week-long celebrations, which come to a close on Sunday October 31st .
