SprOg, the pre-Spraoi Festival for Children and Families, is back with a bang and a jam packed programme of science, theatre, film, dance, music, art, design, coding and all-around great fun for children and families this summer.
Join sprOg at Garter Lane Arts Centre this Saturday, June 17th at 2.30pm for the launch of sprOg, with live illustrative performances by members of Illustrators Ireland and The Comics Lab.
With two thirds of sprOg Festival performances and events completely free of charge, it’s never been easier for children and young people in Waterford to get creative and enjoy learning!
Throughout sprOg week, there will be interactive workshops where kids and young people of all ages can explore funky illustration, create comics, make alien cupcakes, baby boogie dance and lots more! Kids can also enjoy floating shadow puppets in the dynamic children’s theatre production of ‘The Locksmith’s Song’, followed by playful paper puppetry workshops led by Eoin Lynch, one of Ireland’s most experienced performers for young audiences. Throughout the sprOg Festival week, families can pick up their FREE kids exhibition discovery trails and explore natural history in Garter Lane Arts Centre courtyard where local artist Kevin O’ Keeffe has used recycled materials and a touch of creativity to create an interactive Dino Jungle!
Science and creativity are central to the sprOg programme and SFI supported CALMAST, Waterford Institute of Techology’s s award winning STEM Outreach Centre, to host lots of free workshops and performances where you and your little ones can learn all about the The FUNdamentals of Science, The Science of Food and The Science of Colour. Spraoi Weekend will feature free shows of Bubbly STEAM where Award winning balloon artist and Guinness World Record holder, Bubblz will show children how fun STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) can be using huge balloons, soap bubbles and laughter. The Real Science of the Circus will also take centre stage during Spraoi- James Soper, Guinness World Record Holding juggling scientist will perform spectacular juggling and balancing tricks which show how forces work and combine when real circus performers show off their skills.
sprOg, the pre-Spraoi festival for children & families, will be launched alongside the opening of Garter Lane Arts Centre’s summer exhibitions, Without the Words and The Visual Time Traveller in Garter Lane Arts Centre on Saturday June 17th at 2.30pm with live illustrative performances by members of Illustrators Ireland and The Comics Lab from 3.30pm.
This fully immersive storytelling performance combines music, sound design, projected illustration and live performance in a lively cross between theatre and animation! Complimentary refreshments will be kindly provided by The Park Lodge Café.
sprOg Children’s Festival runs from July 31st to August 6th, generously sponsored by Sanofi Ireland and with the support of the Arts Council and Waterford City and County Council.
