During the last week of term we celebrated our achievements in literacy in Mount Sion Secondary School with a ‘pizza party’ celebrating a full year’s reading in our ‘Library League’. Well done to all the pupils who reached their reading targets – and above – over this past year. The success of the league is largely due to the hard work of SNAs Susan Reid and Carla Tyrell.

We also hosted a literacy competition entitled ‘My life in 2014’ and were really astounded by the number and quality of entries to the competition. There were ten top prizes and special mention must be given to Killian Coudol for his wonderful comic-strip entry.

Many thanks also to Mr.Farrelly and Mr. O’Meara for acting as judges for the competition and of course, to our sponsors Bance Nolan Ltd. and Peter O’Keefe.

Geographical Day Trip.
A fun packed day was had by all 2nd Year pupils who attended the JCSP-funded trip to Dunmore East Adventure Centre recently. All the boys got involved in four modules:- (1) Team challenges – improving their communication, leadership, time management, participation and teamwork skills. (2) The group then took a coastal walk to Portally Cove along which they observed features of coastal erosion and deposition. (3) Classroom based activities… such as chart/map work and worksheets as well as identifying features with the aid of a map. (4) Finally, pupils took part in orienteering in the park – revision of feature identification, pedal-boat orienteering, ‘Wibit Wipeout’ – a water fun session, while focusing all the time on safety aspects and dangers related to an adventure activity.

Squashy Couch
A big thank you to all our LCVP pupils who took part in the sponsored Comeragh walk and donated all the funds raised to the Squashy Couch Youth Info. Centre here in Waterford. The donation was graciously received and the Centre has since put the money to great use – updating and improving their Information Brochures. These brochures will be distributed to schools in September. Well done to all!
