The South Eastern Theatre Group returns to the Theatre Royal from tonight, Tuesday, October 30th, through to this Saturday, November 3rd, a show described by Director David Hennessy as ‘a story about ordinary people living in extraordinary times’. David and his hard working cast will present their take on Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ben Elton’s award-winning ‘The Beautiful Game’ follows the fortunes of a group of teenagers from both sides of the religious divide during ‘The Troubles’ in 1960s Belfast.

Directed by David Hennessy, 'The Beautiful Game' is full of fantastic theatrical talent, both experienced and emerging.

Under the watchful eye of team coach Father O’Donnell, John and Del both show enough promise to pursue careers as professional footballers. They’re just two regular teenagers who dream of nothing more than girls and football. When they find love with their girlfriends Mary and Christine, they become swept up in the events that engulf their community and, as time passes, each has to decide whether or not to follow their hearts.Ben Elton tells their story with wit and compassion, while Lloyd Webber’s evocative score combines heart-searing ballads and stirring anthems with the sounds of Ireland.

This show is an inspiring option for both teen and older audiences, thought it’s worth noting that the show contains strong language. “This show is a joyous celebration of the freedom that love can bring,” said David. “And the young crew and adult chorus have put their heart and soul into bringing this story to life for a Waterford audience, and I really hope the public will get behind their efforts and check it out for themselves.” The show will begin nightly at 7.30pm with tickets for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (Stalls and Dress Circle) priced at €21. The Friday and Saturday tickets (Stalls and Dress Circle) come in at €22.50 while the Upper Circle tickets for all five nights is just €19.

Irrespective of what night you book your tickets for, you’re guaranteed to savour a production which will set the Theatre Royal stage alight this week. Best of luck to cast and crew for what we hope shall prove a musical, football flavoured week to remember!
