The Hurler goes Stateside

The Hurler

The Hurler

A web series written by and featuring Waterford comedian Tony Kelly has been nominated for several prestigious awards internationally.

The Hurler, directed by fellow Waterford man Stephen Kelly, will be shown at LAWEBFEST, the Hollywood Web Series Festival, The Rome Web Awards and, later this year, Miami Web Fest.

A ‘mockumentary’ about fictional three-time Hurler of the Year Gar Campion, The Hurler follows Gar’s experiences after a 12-month ban from hurling for assaulting an elderly umpire during a match. Gar’s notoriety off-field almost equals his renown on the pitch.

The Hurler will be screened at LAWEBFEST as an ‘Official Selection’ while Tony Kelly has been nominated for two individual awards – ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy’ and ‘Outstanding Writing in a Comedy’. LAWEBFEST has been running yearly since 2010 and is regarded as the Sundance of web series. It was founded by Emmy Award winner Michael Ajakwe Jr.

The Hurler has also been nominated for as many as five awards at the Rome Web Awards, Best Lead Actor in a Comedy, again for Kelly, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy, Best Editing, Best Poster and is one of only three series up for Best European Creation. The Miami Award Nominations will be announced later in the year.

A graduate of the New York Film Academy and the American Comedy Institute, Tony Kelly has performed stand-up shows in New York, Toronto, Dublin, Cork and his native Waterford. His stand-up performances are showcased in ‘PS, I Hate You’, an album released on iTunes in 2012.

Speaking about the recognition for The Hurler at LAWEBFEST, Tony said: “I’m obviously delighted to see the series is going to reach a wider audience in the city that’s pretty much the capital of the film and entertainment industry worldwide. It’s a great opportunity and I’m grateful to the festival but also to all of those who worked on the series and who’ve supported me in my career so far.”
