‘Plough and the Stars’ a huge triumph

WDS celebrated its 75th Anniversary with a powerful production of Sean O’Casey’s classic play The Plough and the Stars in Garter Lane recently. The play which ran for six nights from the 25th to the 30th of October last was acclaimed by both critics and audiences as an outstanding production. It sold out for the six nights of the run, with many disappointed theatre lovers unable to secure tickets, such was the demand from Waterford’s theatre-going public. Directed by the talented Anne Mekitarian who began her theatrical career with the Society in the 1960s and whose productions have featured in international festivals from Sweden to the USA, this celebratory production featured many of WDS’ experienced actors as well as a host of talented new-comers. It is a testament to the incredible work of Society members past and present that WDS has survived for the past seventy-five years, producing close to two hundred plays for Waterford’s theatre-goers. That the Society has survived and continues to thrive is also a testament to the loyal support it has received from Waterford’s citizens. Their assistance, by way of sponsorship, lending props and stage furnishings and most particularly as audience members, has been and remains vital to the continuing existence and success of WDS. In this very special anniversary year the Society wishes to thank and applaud each and every one of its supporters and looks forward to your continuing support for many years to come.
