Rehearsals begin this week for Climb, an exciting new work written and directed in creative partnership by Ben Hennessy and Eoin Lynch.

This exciting new piece of physical and visual theatre is centred on the incredible first expeditions to Everest where George Mallory and his fellow adventurers literally walked off the map. Mallory was last seen with Sandy Irvine 600 metres from the summit in 1924, his body only found in 1999. The mystery of whether the two reached the summit is still hotly debated today.

Mallory is famously said to have replied to the question “why do you want to climb Everest?” with the retort: “because it is there”, which has been called “the most famous four words in mountaineering”.

Climb has been in development since 2007 when Ben Hennessy and Eoin Lynch, who was at the time working with Red Kettle on Riddley Walker, began to collaborate on an intriguing idea Lynch had to use puppetry alongside live action in the staging of a gripping mountaineering survival story. Since then, the script has evolved much, and animation has also been added to the visual mix, with the enlisting of Tramore-based model maker and animator Rory Thompson.

Lynch will also act in the piece, forming part of the four-strong cast alongside Serena Brabazon – whom many will recognise from The Tudors, Tom Conway – a Berlin-based actor and dancer just back from a climbing expedition in the Alps and Nicholas Kavanagh – who received rave reviews for his portrayal of Friar Laurence in Little Red Kettle’s Romeo and Juliet.

Rising star of the London Stage Jamie Beamish will provide the soundtrack for Climb. Red Kettle regular Jamie worked on Riddley Walker, Boy Soldier and Romeo and Juliet. Anyone who saw those productions will know the dramatic effect his work has. Climb promises to be a visual and physical feast.
