Waterford man making his name in New York comedy and film

Tony Kelly (23) from Collins Avenue in Waterford city has been attending the New York Film Academy and majoring in screenwriting since January of this year. He is a former employee of Sheridan’s Garage on the Cork Road where he worked as a car salesman.

In the six short months he has been in New York Tony has been involved in no less than seven short films. As a screenwriter on ‘The Sexaholic’ a silent MOS piece about a man who preys on victims of nymphomania. He has acted in 5 other short comedy films, one of which he wrote, directed and edited. This film called ‘I am Jeff Shanagarry’ is about an Irish singer who moves to America in order to expand his fanbase and do an autograph signing with the winner of American Idol 2009 but he doesn’t get what he bargained for. Tony also was Assistant Director of another project.

As well as studying acting at New York Film Academy under Columbia Alumni, his ‘I am Jeff Shanagarry’ was executive produced by writer/director of ‘August the First’, Lanre Olabisi, and Student Academy Award Winner, Randall Dottin.

Comedy School

Recently Tony was accepted to New York’s premier comedy school, The American Comedy Institute, run by acclaimed award winner comedy teacher, Stephen Rosenfield. On Saturday June 27th, Tony made his Stand Up Comedy debut in the World famous Gotham Comedy Club in New York City, a venue where many other comics work most of their careers to perform at. Later this month Tony plays on Broadway’s Red Room Comedy Club with Comedy Centrals Tom Schillue and with Comedy Centrals Jessica Kierson the week after.
