A group of Norwegians from Tønsberg, which is the oldest city in Norway visited Waterford, the oldest city in Ireland last week. The group were members of the Norwegian sea shanty choir “Riggerloftets” and were hosted by the Waterford sea shanty group Hooks and Crookes.

Tønsberg was founded in 871 and is the oldest City in Norway. They celebrated their 1100 year anniversary over 40 years ago in 1971. Perhaps some of their ancestors were in the Viking fleet which founded Waterford, 43 years later, in 914.

There are a number of other similarities between Tønsberg and Waterford. Both have built a replica Viking longboat (the world renowned Osberg Viking ship was found in Tønsberg in1904). Tønsberg also has a St Olav’s Church which was founded in 1191 around the same time that St Olavs Church in Waterford was founded.

This is the second time this group have been in Waterford. They were first here in the City in 2011, for the Waterford Seafaring Festival of Music and Song. Hooks and Crookes were delighted to host the group again for this Waterford 1100 visit.
