WYA to Present Crucible

Wat erford Youth Arts joins forces with director Jim Nolan for the upcoming production of Arthur Miller’s 1953 play The Crucible, which opens the last week of August at Garter Lane. Dermot Quinn, well known for his wonderful work with Waterford Spraoi, is collaborating with Jim to build the set for this atmospheric and intense play, which is set during the 17th Century Salem witch trials. Casting has already been completed and readings are taking place, with rehearsals scheduled throughout summer. When first produced, The Crucible was seen as an allegory for McCarthyism and the blacklisting of accused communists happening at the time. It conjures many themes including intolerance, the intrusion of state led morals into the private lives of citizens, mass hysteria and paranoia.
