The expenses of a Waterford City Councillor during 2012 have been referred to the Gardaí for further investigation.

The revelation was made by City and County Manager Michael Walsh at Monday’s monthly meeting during a discussion on a statutory report into the Council’s 2012 finances by the Local Government Audit Service.
Mr Walsh said the case did not concern a “massively significant amount of money” but confirmed that the matter had been referred to Gardaí.
Stating that several Councillors had questioned him about the case, Mr Walsh said he was prohibited from providing further details on the case because “due process had to be observed”.

While most Councillors have remained publicly silent on the matter as we went to press, Mayor John Cummins and Cllr Mary Roche have confirmed that they are not subject to the probe.
