Doubt over future of A|Wear

awearThe 15 staff at A|Wear’s Waterford store face continuing uncertainty following the closure of the chain’s 31 shops throughout the country last Thursday.

Latzur Limited, trading as A|wear, went into examinership on October 8th and attempts were made to put the business on a sustainable footing and secure a buyer.

However this failed and the Waterford shop – along with others around the country – ceased trading last Thursday after  receiver Ken Fennell of Kavanagh Fennell was appointed.

It was anticipated that the business would continue to trade under Receivership and that the Receiver would endeavour to sell the business as a going concern.

In the interim, however, the Receiver announced his intention to assess the feasibility of trading   at some of the stores.

The Waterford shop remained shut at time of going to press, with just four stores nationwide continuing to trade – at Blanchardstown, Dundrum, Grafton Street and Sligo.

A statement from the Receiver said he would endeavour to open a further five to six stores by next week but he is undecided at this point as to what stores will open.

Meanwhile there was further bad news on the city centre’s retail front this week as news emerged that Barratt’s Shows in City Square is to close, with the loss of 10 full and part-time staff.

Mason’s Bar on Michael Street also ceased trading last Friday, with the future of that business remaining unclear.
