Following a trial operation of the service over the past two Fridays, Iarnród Éireann has confirmed that it is to continue to operate an additional Friday evening service on the Dublin / Waterford route in the coming weeks to cater for growing demand.

The additional 16.15hrs Dublin Heuston to Waterford means there is an unprecedented choice of services on Friday afternoons and evenings for customers on the route, with departures at 13.15hrs, 15.10hrs, the extra service at 16.15hrs, 16.40hrs, 17.35hrs and 18.35hrs.

Furthermore, the additional service will only serve Athy and Carlow en route, giving an express journey time of 1 hour 55 minutes from Dublin to Waterford at a time when roads leaving Dublin are heavily congested.

The service is being trialled following growing demand from customers, and representations from the Waterford Chamber of Commerce.

Emmett Cotter, District Manager, Waterford for Iarnród Éireann said “the initial demand for this service, and feedback from customers and the Waterford Chamber of Commerce, shows that this express Friday evening service has the potential to become a very popular option for those travelling to Waterford at the busiest time of the week. We look forward to growing demand for this and other services, for the benefit of our customers and the communities we serve, and improving transport options to and from Waterford.”

Waterford Chamber of Commerce President Dr Derek O’Byrne said: “Connectivity is a hugely important issue on our agenda at Waterford Chamber and we are delighted that our engagement with Irish Rail has brought about this favourable outcome. Waterford offers so much in business, from being a hub for Life Sciences and Pharma Industries, to our strength in tourism. Having the new express link from the capital enhances this and we appeal to the business community in particular to support the new service.”

The extra Friday evening service is available to book online at www.irishrail.ie along with all other trains on the Dublin/Waterford route. Tickets are also available at Iarnród Éireann Stations.
